Making summer magical with a newborn baby looks different from last year. It’s slower, softer, and full of small joys. I’m in the thick of the newborn days, with baby number four. Where time stretches and blurs, and yet… somehow it’s still summer. And I want my kids to feel that.

So we’re finding magic in the everyday, without overdoing it — no big outings, no complicated crafts, no pressure. Just presence.
Here’s how we’re making summer magical, one gentle day at a time:
Healing In The Sunshine
We’re outside when we can be — just in the front yard. I’ll sit in a lawn chair or lay on a blanket with the baby while the kids run through the grass or play in the sandbox. I’ll enjoy a cold cup of healing herbal tea. Sometimes I walk slow laps while baby naps on my chest, soaking in the light and fresh air. It’s not a big adventure — but the summer sun fills us up and helps regulate my body.

Kids Summer Reading Challenge
We joined our local library’s reading program, and it’s honestly smoothed our day along. The big kids dive into books every afternoon, and I get to rest, nurse, and read a few pages of something lovely myself. It’s quiet, slow, and magically filling up my kid’s cup with the fun they crave. What’s more, we can do this all around my easy chair.

Simple Sandwiches & Snacks
I’m not cooking elaborate meals, but cutting summer fruits, making sandwiches, and offering crackers and cheese. After some time outside, I’ll call the kids in for cold treats to make an ordinary day feel special. This summer might not include a trip to the lake or a national park, which I would have liked. However, a picnic right in the backyard counts towards magical summer fun, all while enjoying our new baby.

Gentle Baby Movements
I’m working on getting more active, but while my body is still healing, I’m taking it slow. I will take a short walks with the kids through the neighbourhood. At home, I’ll stretch and work out on the floor, wrestle a chore, or sway and dance between the armchairs while my toddlers follow me around. I’ve also discovered my baby loves to be lifted overhead and bounce on my knees. You can imagine the reps I’m putting in all day! Seeing my baby’s smile makes every part of motherhood and this sweet summer of ours even more magical.

Letting Go of Perfect
I’d love to work on all my Pinterest dreams, but sometimes there’s magic in not trying to do it all too. Some days are effortless hair-dos, and nighties until noon. Some days we stay indoors with books and train sets. And that’s okay. This summer, we’re learning to be a family together with a new baby, which is magical to watch!

Feels Like Summer
This isn’t the summer of packed schedules or Pinterest plans.
We’re making summer magical in the slowest, gentlest ways with a newborn baby.
Library books stacked on the table.
Blueberries bagels and oranges in a bowl.
A baby asleep on my chest while the big kids run barefoot through the grass.
No big plans. Just grace, sunshine, and love..
And that, I think, is magical.

I believe like CS Lewis and Tolkien reflected in their books about true myth and deep magic. Witchcraft is “perversing to what’s already there” – clarified by my friends from the True Magic Podcast. As Christians we are enchanted by Christ, whom by nothing is impossible. Glory be to God.
