Thinking Like A Homesteader
This may surprise some, but you don’t have to have a farm or land to homestead. There’s no magic number of chickens or acers of land that defines a true professional homesteader. However, typically that’s not why people pursue homesteading either. The homesteading life starts in your mindset. It’s how you look at the challenges around you and choose to make do with what you have.
There are many forgotten traditional skills we’ve lost since our great-great-grandparents lived. Mostly due to aptitude and the many conveniences our world now offers, we’ve moved on. Many are realizing today that knowing these skills connect us to the past. We see in history a vigorous people who worked tirelessly to survive the hardships of their times. For generations, our ancestors were given an inherited education. Living together, working their land, and learning how to thrive through every season was how people made it through. These forgotten skills that are so appealing today are home-centric, health and environmentally conscious, and result in beautifully handmade goods.
Do I think we all need to be off-grid and never use a dishwasher? Of course not. We can use the tools we have today to achieve what needs to be done. Homesteading has a pioneer spirit. It chooses responsibility, often over convenience yes, to achieve a more handmade home that celebrates values. It finds reward in self-sufficiency and freedom, working to build resilience, confidence, and deeper appreciation for life’s essentials.
