10+ Simple Ways Overwhelmed Moms Can Reset Their Day

Learn ways moms can reset an overwhelming day and turn it around, quick and simple. Hope this encourages my friends here!

Some days feel like they’re over before they even begin, especially when you’re juggling all the demands of motherhood. Between the endless to-do lists, unexpected curveballs, and that nagging sense of falling behind, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But here’s the good news: you don’t need hours to turn things around. With a few quick, practical ways moms can reset their day, and shake off the stress and reclaim control of their day. These simple steps aren’t about perfection—they’re about taking small, meaningful actions that make a big difference.

When Mom Feels Overwhelmed

Create a Calm Environment

When the day feels like it’s spinning out of control, creating a calm environment can be a lifesaver. This small way allows moms to reset their mood and feel more grounded. By focusing on your surroundings, you’ll signal to your brain that it’s time to pause and breathe. Here are two practical ways to set the tone for a more peaceful space.

Turn Off Everything

Electronics can be a double-edged sword. While they’re helpful for connecting and organizing, they’re also a major source of overstimulation. Constant buzzing from notifications, the glow of screens, or the endless scroll can make an already overwhelming day worse. Sound familiar?

Take control by turning off anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. Put your phone on silent, close your laptop, and keep the TV off. Even just 10 minutes of quiet can feel transformative. It’s not about eliminating these gadgets forever—it’s about giving your mind the chance to breathe.

Consider setting a rule for certain times of day, like “no screens” during lunch or after 9 p.m. The absence of digital noise can drastically improve your ability to focus and help your brain let go of that work-play blur.

Dim Lights To Relax the Eyes

Lighting has a bigger effect on mood than most people realize. Bright, harsh lights can keep you alert and overstimulated, which is the last thing you need when stress levels are high. On the flip side, soft, dim, warm lighting can activate your body’s “relax mode.” When moms need to reset they can eliminate light when the body is feeling overstimulated and sleepy.

Start by flipping off overhead lights and using a floor lamp or a few candles instead. Closing the blinds or curtains can also help if natural light feels too intense. I’ve done this especially when my eyes are hurting looking at a screen when I’m over tired, and a headache starts to set in.

Incorporate Quiet Time

Life as a mom can feel like standing in the middle of a storm some days. Finding a moment to get quiet time might seem impossible, but it’s definitely a big way moms can reset their perspective and heart towards what’s important with renewed vigour. Even a few minutes can help you refocus and approach the day with a better attitude. Let’s talk about how creating space for reflection and prayer can truly transform your day.

Bible Time and Prayer

As a Christians, when everything feels overwhelming, taking time for Bible reading and prayer can act as a much-needed anchor. Personally it’s the time I plead to the Lord for patience, forgiveness when I miss the mark in motherhood, clarity when I can’t tell what’s bothering me, or simply ask for strength to face the tasks ahead. I know the pressures of needing to rush through your day to get it all down, and how easy it is to push aside quiet time with the Lord, but if anyone knows your soul best it’s the Lord.

Honest prayer and Bible reading are simple ways moms can reset their overwhelmed thoughts. In time those verses you run to more often turns into memorization and assurance, and it will be like working a strong muscle that pulls more quickly and easily over time.

Place Bible verses written or printed out where you’ll see them—your bathroom mirror, the fridge, or even next to the coffee maker. You can even get the kids to help you memorize with you! One favorite with our littles is Psalms 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever”. On tough days, this simple reminder has grounded us in the truth that you’re life is not all bad, but is filled with much goodness and the Lord’s promise.

Tell me about how you like to spend your quiet time! Leave encouragement and wisdom for other moms below who like yourself feel the weight of overwhelm too.

Nourish Your Body

When you’re running on empty, it’s hard to show up for your family or yourself. Caring for your body isn’t just self-care—it’s survival care. By focusing on hydration, nutrition, and proper sleep, you’re giving yourself the fuel you need to tackle the day, no matter how overwhelming it feels. Let’s break it down into two simple but game-changing areas: eating and sleeping.

Nourish your body

Hydrate and Eat Well

Think about the last time you ate something healthy or drank a full glass of water. Can’t remember? You’re not alone! Busy moms often put their basic needs on the back burner, but here’s the thing: your body cannot run on fumes. Hydration and good nutrition are your foundation.

A simple way moms can reset their day is to start with water. Dehydration can sneak up on you and make you feel tired, foggy, or even cranky. I like to keep a large mason jar nearby and take small sips throughout the day. If plain water feels boring, toss in some lemon slices or cucumber for a refreshing pick-me-up.

As moms we can often push our needs to nourish our bodies aside, so let this be a gentle reminder to feed yourself well too. It might require a little prep work, but aim for nutrient-dense snacks which not only feeds you but also provides for your overall health and even balances hormones. My favourite thing to eat first in the morning is protein which gives me more energy and strength to push through my day, with fewer crashes, over other things.

Planning a little ahead of time can help too. This is easier when you make more food while you are already in the kitchen. I usually start thinking of snacks and meals before the day gets on too much, spending a few extra minutes to wipe up what we will be eating later. This way I can mosey through my other tasks later on in the day with minimal effort in the food department. Making extra food will always get eaten up with growing kids, and if you really have too much you can always freeze it. You’ll thank yourself later if you plan a little, and find ways to make it easier on yourself.

Don’t Underestimate Sleep

I know it can be hard to find more time to rest when you’re in a season that offers minimal sleep time, especially for moms with newborns or kids waking up multiple times in the night.

If you can, try fitting in power naps. A 15-20 minute nap can feel like hitting the reset button on so much more than your day. To make this happen, I try to find something my kids can do without too much supervision. Maybe this looks like pulling out a safe quiet activity, playing an audiobook, or sitting in a babyproof room your kids can play freely yet safely while you rest your eyes. I sometimes trade-off with my husband an hour before the kids bedtime to get a quick break to either bathe, nap (which might sound crazy, but when I’m pregnant this helped a lot), or rest in a quiet dark room too. I also strongly recommend having a consistent bedtime for your kids, and working on ways to help train them to respect sleep time, so they are well nourished too.

Taking care of your body by nourishing it—both through food and rest—can make the days feel a little less overwhelming. You deserve it.

Tackle Household Tasks

When life feels like it’s piling on, tackling a small household task can provide an instant sense of control. It’s amazing how accomplishing one simple chore can reset your entire day. Think of it as clearing mental cobwebs while you tidy your space. Even if the rest of the day goes sideways, that one small win can help you feel productive and ready for anything.

Ways moms can reset

Sweep It Away

Sometimes all you need is to clear clutter away to feel less “cluttered” inside. Whether it’s wiping down a counter, sweeping up the living room floor, or organizing your pantry, taking a few moments to restore order is a simple yet surprising way moms can reset their day.

When everything around you feels chaotic, your overwhelm often mirrors the enviroment. A cluttered countertop can quietly nag at you every time you glance its way. But here’s the secret: you don’t have to deep-clean the whole house to feel better. Pick one manageable spot and focus on it for five minutes.

Let’s say the kitchen sink is overflowing with dishes. Instead of dreading the entire task, start by rinsing and stacking neatly. That one action creates visible progress, which can be hugely motivating. Suddenly, the mountain doesn’t look so steep.

Or maybe it’s your living room. A quick sweep of the floor or fluffing the couch cushions can make a huge difference. Sometimes I will even hide 90% of my children’s toys to reduce the chance of toys spreading so heavily from corner to corner later. It’s satisfying when you can physically see the progress, and not let stuff cloud your outlook.

Plus, small chores like these give you a sense of accomplishment that carries over. You’re reminding yourself that you’re capable of taking action, that you were made for this job called “motherhood”, even when things feel overwhelming. The trick is to keep it small and doable. Start with one area, finish, and enjoy the boost it brings.

Remember, it isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a little bit of order in the middle of the chaos. Small wins add up, and sometimes sweeping it away—literally—can be the reset you need.

Reduce Your Load

It’s easy for moms to feel like they need to juggle everything at once—work, kids, appointments, household chores, and more. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to do it all. Letting go of unnecessary commitments can feel like putting down a heavy bag you’ve been carrying too long. Let’s explore how to lighten that load and reclaim your energy.

Analyze Your Priorities

When life feels overwhelming, perhaps you’ve barked at your family and you’re wondered where that came from, it’s time to step back and take a hard look at your priorities. Ask yourself: What truly needs my attention right now? Not every task or commitment carries the same weight.

Some things simply aren’t urgent or essential—be okay with letting those slide for now. Sometimes, it’s as simple as accepting that something needs to be a later project so you can do what’s essential. Every mom has limits, and I know it can be hard to prioritize it all.

Further, sometimes the essentials are the most life-giving when given the proper space for them. As moms we can really play and shine when we have the time for them. Maybe we need time so we can prepare that meal we’ve been craving, or organize our closet the way we really want when we have the time to think it through. Maybe throwing things together is not really “life-giving” or refreshing your day-to-day life. You are made for motherhood because God made you a mama, with gifts and interests, made for your family to enjoy. Sometimes moms get this best, it’s important to add that ingredient of love and confidence that only you can give.

Be Okay With Saying No

Saying no can feel uncomfortable, especially when you want to be helpful or avoid disappointing others. But here’s the thing: every time you say yes to something you’re essentially saying no to something else.

It’s important to know what you love to answer confidently. For example, if you love your child’s need for a nap, you won’t prioritize a playdate or appointment during those times. Protect your time by learning to say no with grace and confidence.

Remember, saying no is not selfish—it’s intentional. It aims for what you find ideal for you and your family, protecting what matters and your goals. When you model this for your kids, you’re teaching them the valuable skill of setting boundaries, too.

By prioritizing and setting limits, you’ll create room to breathe. It’s not about doing less—it’s about doing what matters most. This shift alone can be one of the simplest ways moms can reset their day.

Set Your Kids Up For Success

When the day feels heavy and tempers are short, sometimes we need to recognize what leads our children to act up and do some preventative measures. Also, reconnecting with your kids can be one of the refreshing ways moms can reset their day. Simple, intentional moments that make both you and your little ones feel connected and cared for can make all the difference.

Snack Time for Everyone

There’s a reason everyone gets cranky when they’re hungry. Especially when kids can’t express their needs coherently, sometimes the first question to ask is, “is it time for a snack?”. A quick snack break can work wonders for lifting everyone’s spirits and giving your day a little boost.

Something as simple as crackers and cheese, or apple slices will do. It’s important to plan ahead and maintain a flowing routine where kids can learn the times of the day and count on snack time at specific times of the day. This can prevent whining but also help your young child know when the kitchen will be open again to them. Serving food really is a gift of love!

Get Outside for Some Fresh Air

When emotions are running high, stepping outside can be a game-changer. Fresh air and a change of scenery can turn a bad mood around in minutes. For kids, it’s a chance to burn off excess energy, explore freely, and play somewhere new. For you, it’s a nourishing moment to breathe, appreciate creation, and feel refreshed by the joy of your loved ones.

One of the simple ways for moms to reset is to give their children the gifts they need, like the simplicity of outdoor time. Maybe it’s a short trip to the backyard, walking around the block, or visiting a nearby park. Even ten minutes can make a difference. Studies show that spending time outside lowers stress levels and boosts your mood, not to mention does wonders for your kids too.

Encourage your kids to pick a small outdoor activity they enjoy—think blowing bubbles, drawing with sidewalk chalk, or riding bikes. You’ll be surprised how something so simple can create space for connection and joy. And honestly, sometimes the best “therapy” is feeling the sun on your face and the grass under your feet.

Give Your Kids A Bath

Once a mom I was listening to shared the power of a bath, and how this sensory activity can help our kids turn their day around. Sometimes kids just need something new to do, and play in water. There’s something about feeling the flow of water, how weightless you feel floating in it, and watching it fallandsplash before your eyes. It’s also a great time to get clean and feel refreshed from a nice warm bath. I like to add Epsom Salts to my kids baths, and use a bath filter to reduce the smell and effects of clorine, which all makes bath time a healthier activity.

If kids are not a fan of being in water, maybe they’d prefer a water table and manipulating water with just their hands. Whatever works for your kiddo, water could be a helpful tool on a stressful day.

Perhaps the person who really needs a bath is you. I prefer showers, but once and a while having a nice hot bath with the added benefit of magnesium salts can make my weary body not feel so achy at the end of a long day. Only after becoming a mom did I understand why so many bath products are targetted at moms!

Quality Time Activities

Sometimes, the reset you need comes from leaning into connection. Pick an activity that strengthens your bond with your kids—it doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Even five minutes of focused attention can fill their emotional cups (and yours).

Here are a few go-to ideas for instant smiles:

  • Cuddle time: Grab a cozy blanket, snuggle on the couch, read a book, or talk about something you and your child find interesting. There’s comfort in closeness, and children spell love “T-I-M-E”.
  • Dance party: Clear a little space in the living room, turn on some music, and dance like no one’s watching. Let loose and laugh together—it’s a guaranteed mood booster.
  • Arts and crafts: Even something as simple as coloring side-by-side can bring peace and spark creativity.

Nothing really beats quality time with your children, and the more you learn to betogether and enjoy each others company, the better relationship you will have as your child grows up. I try torememberwhen I’m overwhelmed these days will no longer be here, while they are so young and living with me. One day I hope to be surrounded by my children, grand children, and if the Lord wills my great grand children, but it starts by spending time with my children today.

Ways Moms can reset the day

Seek Support

Being a mom often feels like carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Theres a lot of pressure we feelas moms and sometimes in order to turn an overwhelming day around, we just need to ask for help. Maybe its asking for someone to help watch your kids for an hour or asking another mom for some practical advice.

Sometimes, just venting about your day isn’t enough—you need concrete, actionable advice to lighten the load. That’s where talking to someone with experience can make all the difference. I strongly recommend asking moms either a few years or kids ahead of you, “How do you handle [insert challenge] without losing your temper?” It’s a lighthearted way to initiate a deeper talk, and it opens the door for practical, relatable tips.

When you’re overwhelmed, thinking clearly or coming up with solutions is hard by yourself. Sometimes our own voice gets way too harsh with ourselves, and a good friend taught me that can often be taken to heart by other moms who feel the same. That’s why leaning on the wisdom of someone you trust,or asking for a helping hand are simple ways moms can reset. You’re not meant to live life alone, especially in motherhood. It’s humbling. By letting other moms step in to support you, share their wisdom, you’re not only growing stronger as a mother but building meaningful connections, too.

Conclusion

Resetting your day doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or unattainable. Small, intentional actions—like creating a calm space, nourishing your body, or asking for help—can make a huge difference. The key is to focus on what’s manageable and meaningful for you in the moment.

Motherhood comes with its challenges, but you don’t have to tackle them alone or more take on more than you can handle. Hopefully these strategies have helped!
