Sewing a birthday banner from fabric adds a special touch to any celebration. Handmade decorations can also be reused and part of your family’s birthday traditions. By sewing your own birthday banner, you have the opportunity to tailor it to the birthday person, the theme of your party, or make a classic design that can be reused again and again. You may even choose to add more to your banner, like numbers, or the birthday person’s name! There’s oodles you can do with what you’ll learn from this tutorial. I’ll cover the basics, from choosing the fabric to customizing the letters, and a step by step sewing guide to help those new to sewing. Materials Needed
For this birthday banner project, it’s essential to choose a fabric that’s easy to work with and will lay flat well. I used stretchy denim for the back, because it was very pretty and sturdy, but I regret choosing as it required a stronger sewing machine needle, and it tended to curl when sewing with it (reducing the tension helped though). What would have been better was a fabric like all cotton, and treat it like a quilt.
I highly recommend using felt for letters, as felt does not fray and keeps the edges nice and sharp. The only downside with felt is the texture and you would only be able to hand wash it. You could make this banner very simple and make the whole banner from felt! I could see it looking perfect for a kids birthday with many colours. there are some very luxurious felt companies with muted tones and varying thicknesses.
When choosing what you need for your party, pick a few colours to work from that go well together, something that will make your letters pop out but still eye-catching. When selecting fabric, consider the theme of the party and the atmosphere you want to create. Additionally, a good pair of fabric scissors, the right thread, and a good sewing machine are all must-haves for professional-looking results. You’ll want to draw a template to determine just how much fabric you will need.
In Short Form You Need:
- 1-2 Yards/ Meter Of Cotton Fabric (for front and back banner pieces)
- 1 Yard/ Meter of Felt Fabric
- Spools Of Matching Threads
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine
- Ruler
Preparing the Fabric Pieces
You’ll want to create template patterns with some paper of your banner shape and the letters. Add a quarter inch around your banner pattern for seam allowance. I could see how having one of those maker Cricut cutters could come in handy for this project, to make it go faster. However, with a little time and the drive to make something unique, you can get this project done.
After you’ve cut your templates, and selected the fabric for your birthday banner, measure and cut the fabric. Be sure to double the count of your banner flags, as you’ll be sewing the front and backs of the birthday banner together, and turn them right-side out to hide our edges. If you have a serger, that would transform the look and speed of this project.
Measuring and Cutting:
- Begin by determining the desired size of your birthday banner.
- Do not cut the banner flag tails just yet, instead leave it as a rectangle for now.
- Use a ruler or measuring tape to make a template, ensuring each flag is the same size.
- Carefully cut along the marked lines using good fabric scissors, or a rotary cutter, for a clean edge.
- If you are using a template, everything will look pretty uniform. Don’t fret if it’s a little imperfect though, it adds to the homemade charm.
Tips for precision:
- Use fabric chalk or a light fabric marker for accurate marking.
- Drawing on felt is tricky. For the felt fabric letters, I reversed the letter when tracing, drew a quarter inch away with a marker, and cut within the lines to hide any chance of marker lines showing.
- Consider using a rotary cutter and a cutting mat for precise and smooth cuts with your banner flags.
- Taking your time can give a better-finished product, but don’t let perfectionism steal the joy of this fun project. Guaranteed no one will notice any little imperfections.
Assembling the Banner
Sewing It Together:
When putting together your birthday banner pieces, arrange everything in piles, either in groups (letters with letters, etc) or in individual sets (with front and back pieces, and a letter being one set). You’ll need your template, a ruler, and your sewing machine. I really don’t recommend hand sewing unless you have a lot of time to prepare for the party. In a crunch though, the sewing machine zips everything together pretty quickly.
Sewing The Front
Begin by selecting your three fabric pieces: one front, one back, and one letter. First measure where your letter is going to sit. Maybe take note of how far up from the bottom the letter will rest. Use a ruler to measure the distance on each side of the letter to on the banner to determine if it’s centered. Felt has a way of sticking to other fabrics, it’s actually why quilters will use felt boards to plan their quilting pieces on. So you may not need to pin your letters down. I just stuck it on in the middle of the banner (front piece), made sure it was straight and sewed slowly around each letter. Loosen your tension if the banner is curling, bubbling, or pulling at all around the letter.
Sewing The Back
Next place right sides together, your back and front (with the already sewn letter), and place your template on top (my kids helped colour my template, which I love). Now you could just trace with a very light pencil where your flag will have tails, but you could also move the template a quarter inch upwards a little and sew a quarter inch away from the template (like I show here). After sew up the sides, but leave the top open. Trim your edges to reduce bulk.
Then it’s time to turn your banner right side out! Use a pointed object, like a pen with a lid, and push those tail points out. You could iron it flat, and then just sew the top (don’t forget to turn the raw hem inside the flag to hide those edges). I decided to sew an entire border around my flag, which disguises the top sew line.
Making The Banner
You have finished sewing your banner flags, but now it’s time to put your letters on a string of some kind. I chose to use clothes pins on some twine, for a rustic country look, but you could attach your letter permanently to a fabric ribbon, or rope, and call it a day!
Could I just use glue?
Certainly! Maybe you would just like to glue the flags together based on your preference and expertise, which is fine. For a no-sew option, fabric glue can be used to bond the flags together. Maybe triangles would be an easier shape to glue together, making for a quicker and easier assembly.
