Sewing a custom vest for your cherished stuffed animals is going to make your kids jump with glee! There’s something truly special about creating unique pieces that bring joy to both you and your kids.
I thrifted our Bun-Bun (as we call it), from a yard sale years ago, and I didn’t know it was a Peter Rabbit stuffy at the time because he had no blue coat! Then I saw Peter Rabbit birthday parties circling online and realized our Bun-Bun might be a vintage Peter Rabbit toy. With a quick search, sure enough, our Bun-Bun was! Our son sleeps with his Bun-Bun every night, and I thought while our son was still too young to understand how to request a specific theme for his birthday, we decided to make Bun-Bun the theme of the party, and introduce Peter Rabbit books to our children too. You could imagine the excitement our kids had to see our beloved toy get a special thing to wear for the coming birthday! Because Bun-Bun’s arms are so small, we made this Peter Rabbit coat a vest instead. Crafting this one-of-a-kind garment took me back to the days my grandma stayed up late to sew Barbie toy clothes for us girls (how spoiled we were)!

In this post, I’ll guide you through the steps to sew a charming vest for your stuffy, making the process easy and enjoyable. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a novice with a passion for DIY projects, this tutorial will equip you with the skills needed to create a precious outfit for your fluffy friend.
Materials Needed
Sewing a vest for a stuffy is not too hard of a sewing project, that will bring charm to your toy collection. Before you start stitching, make sure you have all the necessary materials at hand. Here’s a comprehensive list to get you started:

- Fat Quarter Square Of Cotton Fabric
- Sewing Machine
- Fabric Scissors
- Ruler or Measuring Tape
- Matching Blue Thread
- Bias Tape
- Pins Or Clips to Hold In Place
- Paper & Pen To Make A DIY Pattern
Choosing the Right Fabric
When it comes to selecting the fabric for a stuffy’s vest, prioritize comfort and durability. Opt for soft materials that will withstand cuddles and playtime. Consider using cotton for a breathable and easy-to-work-with option. Felt can add a cozy touch to the vest but it won’t be very durable to wash. Flannel provides warmth and a plush feel though! Each fabric choice will give the vest a different look and feel, so pick one that best suits stuffy’s style and your sewing skills.
Sew A Vest Tutorial
Preparing the materials before starting your sewing project is crucial for a successful outcome. Here’s a step by step guide for sewing a vest for your toy stuffy.
Creating A Vest Pattern
Finding the perfect pattern for your stuffy might prove difficult. I’ll show you how I used a sheet of paper to tailor to our special stuffy. To sew a vest to fit your stuffy like a glove, you’ll need to measure from the middle of the back to the back of the arm. Draw on the paper while laying it on the stuffy. Cut the paper in small increments to see how much more to remove. Then do the same process in the front.
Cut Your Vest Pieces
After you have designed the vest pattern it’s time to transfer on the fabric and cut! I like to iron my fabric flat, and then use a light pencil crayon to draw my pattern onto the fabric. I’ll first draw the pattern on the fabric and then draw an added a 1/4 inch seam allowance line to know where to cut. I just eyeball it for the most part, as long as there’s enough room to hold that sew line securely. You’ll need two vests cut, one for the inside vest, and one for the outside vest.
Sew The Vest Seams
To make this easier sew your stuffy’s vest seams together. It might help to lay everything flat on the table first, and work on it one part at a time. You don’t want to see your lines you drew on the nice side of your vest, so place them on the wrong side to hide them. Press your vest flat, and separate those seams to prevent bulk when sewing.
TIPS:
- Use a straight stitch when sewing.
- Practice on a separate piece of the same fabric to test and adjust your tension.
- Make small adjustments to your tension dials, and consult your sewing machine manual to trouble shoot problems. (I do this all the time myself!)
- When ironing fabrics, opt for lower temps to prevent burning and discolouring your fabric.
Pinning the Fabric
Once you have all the fabric pieces cut out, it’s time to pin them together securely. Use straight pins or clips to align the edges of the vest, right sides together. Pinning the pieces together will keep them in place during the sewing process and prevent the material shifting that could lead to misalignment.
Sewing The Arm Holes Of The Vest
I made the mistake of leaving this step at the end without a plan. So here are a few options to choose from to decide in advance how you want to finish sewing your stuffy’s vest.
- Use Bias Tape (DIY or Storebought): This is likely the best option, and it’s the same idea quilters use on the ends of quilts. You would do this step at the very end of your vest’s construction. With bias tape you would essentially wrap your edges in a binding to prevent them from fraying. You could secure it by either blindly, and sew through all layers, hoping it’s catching everything, or from inside (opened) and then outside for a professional look. It could be really cute with a contrasting colour and it will give you a very nice finish overall.
- Turn In Holes First: If you are in a crunch, you could try this. First cut small slites up into your seam allowance area around the arm holes to fold the edge back and sew down flat. I did find trying this method very tedious with the size of vest I was working on. Depending on the size of your vest, this could be easier for you. Then sew the stuffy’s vest right sides together, turn right side out, and then sew the arm holes together.
- Serge Edge With Button Feature: I chose to do this method because I needed to keep my fabric from fraying more and get it done before our birthday party. Using the button feature on your sewing machine, move your needle to the far left side. and slowly go around the armhole a few times. You could sew once, cut the edge, and then sew around again until the edge looks strong. This turned out messier than I would have liked, but it will be durable, and my kids don’t mind the finished product! (This option probably won’t work if you’re using a programmed sewing machine that sews the buttonhole for you. You need to be able to manipulate the fabric free hand. )
Sewing The Vest Together
With the vest facing right sides together, sew the outside seams together, but leave a small two-three inch gap to be able to turn the whole vest right side out. Do not sew around the arm holes yet! When you have it right side out, use a blunt pointed tool that can gently push all the seams and corners out. Then press your vest flat. Sew an outside border to both close the gap you turned through, turning the excess fabric on the inside of course, and giving it a strong sturdy edge.
Consult the previous step to finish sewing the arm holes on your stuffy’s vest.
Also, I know my armholes are not very professional. I wanted to show the completed product for you all. I might redo the armhole with some bias tape later. As you can see the kids have been playing with it a lot, so the button serged stitch does work, but it isn’t too durable.
Final Touches and Care Instructions
After finishing the sewing part, it’s time for the final touches. Before presenting the vest to your children on the stuffy, check for any loose threads. Giving your vest a small press with the iron will achieve a polished look too.
Embellishments
You could add embellishments like buttons, however they could pose as a chocking hazard. Instead consider using quality fabric, patches, or embroidery to the vest to add personality. Whatever you do will add character and charm to your beloved toy!
Care Tips For Your Toy’s Vest
To clean your stuffy’s vest and keep it looking its best, here are some tips to help you preserve your hard work:
- Hand Washing: Gently soak, scrub, and squeeze out any dirt on the vest.
- Drying: Lay the vest flat on a towel to dry to maintain its shape.
- Ironing: If the vest wrinkles, use an iron on a low setting to smooth out any creases. Be sure to iron on the reverse side too!
