What You’ll Need:

  • 5-6 vanilla beans (Madagascar, Tahitian, or Mexican)
  • 1 cup of vodka (or bourbon for a deeper flavor)
  • A clean glass jar with a tight-sealing lid (Get flip-cap bottles HERE on Amazon)

Step 1: Slice the Vanilla Beans

Use a sharp knife to split each vanilla bean lengthwise, exposing the fragrant seeds inside. If your jar is small, you can also cut the beans into smaller pieces.

Step 2: Add the Beans to a Jar

Place the sliced vanilla beans into your glass jar. You’ll want enough beans to ensure a rich, deep flavor.

Step 3: Pour in the Alcohol

Fill the jar with vodka (or bourbon) until the beans are fully submerged with at least 1 cup of alcohol. The alcohol extracts the vanilla flavor over time, so make sure the beans are covered completely.

Step 4: Store and Shake

Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place. Give it a gentle shake every few days to help the infusion process.

Step 5: Wait and Enjoy!

Vanilla extract needs to steep for 3-6 months, but the longer the better. The longer it sits, the more intense the vanilla flavor will be! Making a big batch early on in the year, to be ready in time or all the festive months around Thanksgiving and Christmas is a great way to ensure you have delicious pure vanilla extract in time. it even makes a great gift to share!

Bonus Tip:

Keep topping off the jar with more alcohol after using some extract. The beans will continue to infuse, giving you an endless supply of homemade vanilla!
